Summer Makes Me Silly

I have to stretch myself to like summer. There are things ABOUT it that I love, like homegrown tomatoes and peaches and, well, green. And I do understand that you can’t have bread without firing up the oven, but does it have to be so hot for so long. I mean, we’re talking biscuits, not bisqueware. Even melons don’t need nighttime high seventies.
Phooey. And it isn’t even July quite yet.

So, I think I am going to go on a diet of sorts. Cut back on the portions if nothing else. Stop eating when I’m full and don’t start unless I’m hungry. It’s a plan.

Started off with breakfast of leftovers. Guess it’s the senior East Nasty version of leftover pizza. Half a piece of Sweet 16th gritatta and a bunch of mache greens… I don’t know what Dan and Ellen do to those grits. It’s probably a liberal application of olive oil. Really a rich dish, especially when you consider it’s at heart cornmeal with some dried tomatoes and mushrooms.

Trying to decide whether or not to hang around the house and wait for the guy to call about coming by and discovering where the water in the basement comes from. There is so much that needs to be done that it simply depresses me. Just one look around and I lose any energy that might have accrued overnight. Like 0.001% interest. My housekeeping interest has never been of much account. It would make sense to work on bits every day instead of saving up for the big push.

I should probably begin with one corner of one room for one hour. That seems reasonable.

Maybe tomorrow.

For now, I think I’ll go to the Mugs and get my daily Americano.

Greenpopulation

The homesite green people have been downsizing by attrition over the past few years, and we’ve gotten down to a skeleton staff. Rosemary has been taking care of the back lot since Figgy passed on over the winter, and Little Rose on the porch has been lording it over the potted sage and the volunteers that have shown up in the old planters by the steps. Guess to be thorough, I’d have to mention the bush, which is one of those generic foundation planting plants, and A-zalea (B bit the dust a few years back); and the sedum clumps; and Jim’s hennychix.

But things are changing now.

I’ve gave in to the spring urge and got dirty. Now I’m buying some more plants, and there’s more to come. And I’ve splurged for some more pots for the porch. Whooeee! We’re having a greenpopulation boom.

I bought a pot of parsley that was seeded really densely. There must have been two dozen plants. Just half trying I separated out a dozen sets. The swallowtails will love me come September.

Got a green zebra tomato, and a red grape for salads.

Lemon balm and, one of my favorites, lemon verbena. Lavender, marigold mint (T. lucida), a variegated thyme. Some leftover seeds for basil and nasturtiums and sunflowers (from the SFbee sunflower project. Thanks) Less than a week and the basil and nastis are already showing their cotyledons

For pure show, I bought a ninepack of moss rose and have them scattered around all over the place. I even set up a windowbox planter and have it resting on the ornamental brickwork on the outside of the chimney. Pretty little yellow daisy and a purple petunia. And a moss rose. I’d have moved the lemon balm into that, but it is just too freaking big already.

It’s beginning to get pretty wet out there. As of yesterday, when things had slacked off for a bit, there were large swatches of the area reporting well over 8 inches of rain from the past few days. It has settled back in with a soaking vengence today.

And it is just cool enough to be uncomfortable. The heater’s not been behaving right lately, so we have it turned off downstairs, or I’d probably have the heat going. I know Miranda would be happier. That is one warmth loving cat.

I’ve already been out this morning, slogging around in the wet and hoping against hope that people will use a little sense driving. Not great fun, but I had to go to the vet and pick up some meds for Kate. Looks like her UTI problem is kicking in again. So we’ll have another course of antibiotics and hope that does the trick.

Been up for hours now. Woke up sometime around 4-4:30 because an idea started buzzing around in my head, and then the cat was messing with me, and the next thing Jim’s started in with the snoring. So I got up, turned on a flashlight and dug out my notebook.
